Film Talk: Nankai, with Guang Zu, Tuesday, 2/26, 3-5pm

Please join us for a special screening and panel discussion of the acclaimed documentary film, Nankai: The Tale of a School (2018), with filmmaker Guang Zu. In six episodes, the first of which will be shown in English, this series is about prestigious Nankai University in China founded by Dr. Chang Poling who studied at Teachers College between 1917-1919. It showcases the strong influence of Teachers College and its faculty members on the development of the university. Filmed in part at Teachers College, Episode One (50 minutes) includes substantial interviews with leading faculty and staff who comment on the rich history. The well-received series was aired in China on CCTV last year.

The film director, Mr. Guang Zu, and a number of TC faculty members, including Dr. Henan Cheng, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of International and Transcultural Studies, are invited to join the panel discussion about the historic ties between Teachers College and educational development in China.

Discussants:

Henry Levin is William H Kilpatrick Professor of Economics and Education. He is Co-Director of the Center for Benefit-Cost Studies in Education, (www.cbcse.org). He is also the David Jacks Professor of Higher Education and Economics, Emeritus, at Stanford University where he served from 1968-99 after working as an economist at the Brookings Institution in Washington. From 1978-84 he was the Director of the Institute for Research on Educational Finance at Stanford, a federally-funded R. & D. Center. From 1986-2000 Levin served as the Director of the Accelerated Schools Project, a national school reform initiative for accelerating the education of at-risk youngsters encompassing about 1,000 schools in 41 states. He holds a B.S. in Marketing and Economics from New York University and M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from Rutgers University.

Portia Williams is Executive Director of the Office of International Affairs. She holds a doctorate in International Educational Development and Policy Studies and an Ed.M in International Family and Community Education from Teachers College Columbia University. She also holds an M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.She is an Assistant Professor (Coterminous) in the Department of International and Transcultural Studies at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Henan Cheng is the Associate Director of the Center on Chinese Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. She has also been an adjunct professor in the Department of International and Transcultural Studies at Teachers College since 2012. Her primary research interests include international and comparative education, educational development and equity issues in China.

The Center for Language Education (CLE) at Johns Hopkins University invites applications for a full-time Lecturer in CHINESE for the Academic Year 2019.

CLE is seeking an individual who is finishing up or has recently finished his/her MA or PhD with knowledge and familiarity in the most up-to-date theory and practice of language pedagogy. Faculty in the CLE share a consistent teaching philosophy across each of the language programs, and the Center offers workshops for professional development and communication of current methodologies in language teaching. Applicants should be open to furthering his/her teaching skills and working closely with fellow CLE faculty members. At least 2 years of experience as a Teaching Assistant or Lecturer in the Chinese language is strongly desired.

Responsibilities of the successful candidate include teaching a total of 12 contact hours per week.

NYU Shanghai is seeking to fill three full-time positions in its Chinese Language Program. We are seeking Chinese language lecturers who can:

  • 1) teach with a load of 4 Chinese language courses (4-credit per course, 2 courses for Fall semester and Spring semester respectively) per academic year (excluding summer/winter sessions).
  • 2) teach language courses for short-term intersessions during summer/winter (with additional pay).
  • 3) teach additional language study sessions, including preparation classes for HSK, online language study, evening faculty/staff Chinese language classes, etc. (with additional pay).
  • 4) create course syllabi, supplementary materials and examination papers and manage other course-related work for the courses accordingly.
  • 5) offer 2 office hours weekly per semester (Fall and Spring semesters) for consultation and students’ additional study.
  • 6) work for the Chinese language clinic, 3 hours weekly per semester (Fall and Spring semesters).
  • 7) assist with the placement and exemption exams, including conducting online or face-to-face interviews, proctoring exams and grading exam papers.
  • 8) assist the Director of Chinese Language Program in organizing and coordinating Chinese language and culture activities, language contests, and field trips for students, academic conferences, workshops, training, lectures, seminars and faculty recruitment, as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Qualified candidates should:

  • 1) have Master’s degree minimum, specialization in Chinese language, Chinese literature, Linguistics and other relevant academic concentrations is preferred;
  • 2) be familiar with US and Chinese educational systems;
  • 3) be fluent in English and Chinese, oral and written;
  • 4) have minimum 2 years of experience teaching students from English speaking countries, the experience of teaching advanced and/or post advanced level Chinese language courses (e.g. classical Chinese, literature reading, business Chinese, Chinese film, etc.) is preferred;
  • 5) possess problem solving, time management, excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • 6) be responsible, self-motivated, flexible, team player, able to work well under pressure, and have the creative ability to use one’s own initiative.
