III. Class Research
The entries in this section of the website present research conducted by members of the class in response to questions raised by the drawings. Among these questions were: What is being depicted in the drawings? What was going on in the community when the drawings were made? How do these drawings relate to other forms of Kingigan, Seward Peninsula, and Inupiat material culture? In what ways do the combination of innovative technique and commitment to a perpetuation of cultural aesthetics that we see in these drawings relate to the work of other Inupiat artists from the region?
One of the things the students wanted to know most of all is what contemporary people at Kingigan would have to say about these drawings. Unfortunately, because we worked on this project in New York City for only one university semester, we were unable to develop the means to answer this question (though we hope that the exhibition and website lead to conversations with people from Kingegan that we can learn from). The entries below draw on published materials available in academic libraries and, when possible, incorporate information and videos from Seward Peninsula people. Each entry offers citations and links designed to lead readers farther.
