Seminar Description

As instructors, how do we teach our students critical digital literacy practices? This seminar focuses on ways to better integrate teaching digital skills into the intellectual work of your course. This seminar is held in partnership with the Columbia Libraries.

Seminar Learning Objectives

By the end of this Seminar, you will be able to:

  • Evaluate digital skills in light of intellectual practices in your discipline.
  • Create activities to scaffold students’ development of mastery of digital skills.
  • Develop rubrics to assess students’ progress and define different stages of mastery.

Seminar Structure

Meeting Structure
Each seminar meeting consists of two parts. The first half is a hands-on workshop led by a seminar facilitator introducing a new aspect or consideration for teaching digital literacy. The second half of each meeting is more of a "lab" session, in which you focus on applying previous knowledge and new approaches from the seminar to your instructional context.

Expectations
Seminar participants are expected to attend all five seminar meetings. They are expected to complete assigned reading before attending the session and respond to reflection prompts after each meeting. Participants are expected to present their work for the semester at the showcase on the last day.
