HINDUISM HERE is a seminar conducted in the coordinate Religion Departments at Barnard College and Columbia University. This course explores the diversity of “lived Hinduism” in the greater New York area—its historical, theological, social, and ritual dimensions. Individual field projects focus on worshiping communities, yoga centers, and other Hindu-related social forms such as community associations, retreat centers, art exhibits, or parades and processions.
The course has been offered in spring 2003, spring 2005, fall 2013, and fall 2019. Student essays are of two types: brief portraits and longer articles. Sometimes we post only the brief portrait, but in many instances you will be able to see a longer posting too. We wish to express our gratitude to each of the organizations we have visited and studied—for hospitality, guidance, criticism, and great measures of enthusiasm and patience.
