HINDUISM HERE is a seminar conducted in the coordinate Religion Departments at Barnard College and Columbia University. This course explores the diversity of “lived Hinduism” in the greater New York area—its historical, theological, social, and ritual dimensions. Individual field projects focus on worshipping communities, yoga centers, and other Hindu-related social forms such as community associations, retreat centers, art exhibits, or parades and processions.
The course has been offered in spring 2003, spring 2005, and fall 2013. Student essays from 2003 and 2005 can be seen in the “Research Sites” section of this website. They are of two types: brief portraits and longer articles. Please remember that all are student efforts, invariably the product of hard work but done in a relatively short time and with various levels of background. We wish to express our gratitude to each of the organizations we have visited and studied—for hospitality, guidance, criticism, and great measures of enthusiasm and patience.
