Bias occurs when an individual interprets or judges others based on their own background and experience. This results in viewing other’s practices, expectations, and perceptions as inferior or wrong. Bias can be cultural, linguistic, or based on socioeconomic status. In speech and language pathology, we look for bias in assessment materials including standardized tests, in curriculum, and in our own perceptions of the individuals with whom we work.
