Eliciting Quality Narratives in Expressive Language (DDPE Playlist: Module 6)

Download Video

In this module Cate shows us how to elicit a quality narrative sample in order to assess expressive language.Cate chooses the child’s favorite book as a retell, which ensures the child is familiar with the story and motivated by the task. She also uses this opportunity to ask wh-questions. Cate notes that Alex’s intelligibility is her biggest area of concern by this point in the evaluation. She also notes his metalinguistic skills while retelling the story. However, Cate will likely not understand him without his mother’s help. Cate then repeats the narrative retell with the book as a support. He frequently looks to his mother for help interpreting his utterances.  As with previous modules, Cate indicates where the information gained in the section of the evaluation should be located in the finished report.
