Christopher V. H.-H. Chen is the Senior Assistant Director of Graduate Programs and Services at the CTL, where he develops and facilitates programming and services for graduate students, postdocs, and other instructors at Columbia, and is the administrative co-leader for CIRTL at Columbia, an NSF-supported future faculty development initiative. Chris is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Columbia, where he has received a Start Small! Mini-Grant from the Office of the Provost to introduce case study approaches to the course “Introduction to Chemical Engineering.”

Chris earned his Ph.D. in Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) from Princeton, where he studied the transport and dynamics of surfactants to and along oil-water interfaces with applications in oil spill remediation and drug delivery, and holds a M.S. and B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Stanford. While a graduate student, Chris was a preceptor for classes and labs in the CBE department, for which he was an awarded an Excellence in Teaching Award by the Princeton Engineering Council, and co-developed the course “Venture Capital & Finance of Innovation” in the Keller Center for Innovation in Engineering Education as a TA. At Princeton, he served as both a Graduate and Undergraduate Learning Fellow at the McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning for several years, where he trained, observed, and mentored TAs, focusing on improving instructor-student communication and pedagogical resource distribution.

Away from the CTL, Chris enjoys dancing and teaching swing dance (Lindy Hop), playing improvised percussion (the washboard) in a jazz band, and cooking and eating.
