How do you motivate students in large classes to collaborate? In this session, three instructors will share their innovative approaches to group assignments, including case study method, pair programming, and group problem solving. The discussion will cover the challenges and rewards presented by managing variables such as physical space and technology, group dynamics, and student feedback.

Close and critical analysis of video, audio, and images is increasingly intrinsic to a broad range of disciplines. In this session, faculty in the humanities and social sciences discuss recent discoveries that they and their students have made while working in Mediathread, a multimedia analysis platform developed by CTL in partnership with Columbia faculty. The session will highlight three types of multimedia assignments that support scholarly analysis: the targeted selection, the comparative sequence, and the multimedia composition.

Ever wondered what it takes to redesign a course that involves significant development of new course resources? In this session, two instructors and their teaching assistants will share their experiences. Issues explored include: the teaching and learning challenges that motivated instructors to create these new course resources, the nature of the materials designed and how they met the course needs, design and implementation challenges and how they overcame them.
