In this session we discuss different ways to cultivate an active classroom. We will explore techniques such as just-in-time-teaching and other techniques to increase student engagement and retention of concepts. The session culminates with a consideration of effective questions and the use of audience response systems to measure where students are in their learning.

Curate the Resources Fall 2015

WEEK 2:
CURATE the RESOURCES

This week we will discuss different ways to collect, manage, and interrogate digital source materials in your curriculum. What is being collected, and who should be doing the collecting? Instructors often wish to highlight a collection of digital resources for close analysis. And students engaged in content discovery and curation often participate more in class and gain important practice in identifying, vetting, and organizing content in their field of interest.

Drive the Discussion Fall 2015

WEEK 3:
DRIVE the DISCUSSION

This session explores different methods for stimulating meaningful discussions in the classroom and on the web. Questions we will ask include: What makes discussion an effective instructional approach? What challenges are there associated with discussion? How can we extend the discussion from the classroom to the online environment or from the online environment to the classroom? The session culminates in a discussion of techniques and tools to help drive your pedagogical goals.

Produce the Media Fall 2015

WEEK 4:
PRODUCE the MEDIA

This session surveys ways that video can be used as an effective instructional tool. We’ll address these questions: Is video mainly for content delivery? What are other ways that video can be used in our courses? What are some best practices for creating effective educational video content? What software and equipment is required for educational video creation? No previous experience using video in teaching is necessary to participate in this session.

Show the Blend Fall 2015

WEEK 8:
SHOW the BLEND

In this final installment of CTL’s RewirED series, we celebrate the work of Columbia faculty who have experimented with blended learning techniques this semester. In addition, we present awards and gifts to the Fall 2015 RewirED participants who have attended 2 or more sessions during the semester. All past RewirED attendees are encouraged to join us and ask questions about content from any of the prior four sessions. Best practices that emerged throughout the semester will be highlighted. Lunch will be available to registered participants.
